With the new year just a few short weeks away, many homeowners are thinking about ways to spruce up their space in 2017. And while major renovations and overhauls are exciting, you don’t have to break the bank to update your space and give a new feel to your home in the new year.

Here are 5 design ideas to update your space in 2017 that are quick, simple and won’t break the bank:

1. Change The Small Things

Sometimes, the small things can have a huge impact in a room. By adding or changing small details, you can completely change the look and feel of a space.

If you’re redoing your living room, add new throw pillows to the couch, a new case on your coffee table to house fresh flowers or switch out your plain picture frames for something more fun and designed. Updating your bedroom? Display some of your most visually interesting books on your nightstand or add a mirror above the dresser to make the room appear larger. Does the children’s playroom need an update? Add fun wall decals to give the room a more whimsical appearance.

2. Add An Accent Wall

There might not be an easier way to make a big impact and completely change the look of a room than adding an accent wall. An accent wall can tie the color scheme of a room together, visually break up the space and draw attention to a specific area of the room. An accent wall is a quick and easy project you can do yourself and shouldn’t take more than a day to complete.

When choosing the color for your accent wall, be sure to consider how it will work in the rest of the room. If the other three walls are white, then a bright or rich color can be a great choice. If the other walls are colored or off-white, be sure to pick a color that compliments and doesn’t clash with the other walls. If you wanted to take it a step further, you could stencil a design or use wallpaper to add extra visual interest.

3. Switch Out Your Bedding (And Bed)

Often, the first thing you notice about a bedroom is the bedding. By switching out the bedding, you can create an entirely different experience in the bedroom at a minimal cost.

If you have a solid comforter, try switching to a patterned design. Or, if you’re using bedding with muted colors, try livening things up and adding some brights. You can also add accent pillows to complement your new bedding choices and tie everything together.

If you want to take it a step further, you can also upgrade your actual bed. Adding a new headboard (or making one yourself) is another update that has a big impact on the feel and design of a room.

4. Rearrange The Furniture

If you’re looking for a free way to update your space, try rearranging your furniture. Moving things around can not only visually change a space, but it can also make it more functional.

Look for opportunities to rearrange or re-purpose furniture in a way that makes your space feel less cluttered and more open. Move furniture from one room to another to create different looks and feels in each space. If you’re looking to feel more calm and relaxed in your space, try arranging your furniture according to Feng Shui principles.

Not only will rearranging your furniture make your space feel new, it also has several practical benefits. Rearranging your furniture periodically will give you a chance to deep clean areas that your furniture was blocking and can help avoid wear-and-tear on your flooring.

5. Add A Gallery Wall

When it comes to decorating, few DIY projects make as much of a statement (especially at such a low price point) than gallery walls.

A gallery wall is a great way to display the pieces that are most important to you – anything from art, photos, prints, mirrors, installation pieces and just about anything else you could think of. Gallery walls are extremely versatile and would be a great addition for a hallway, living room, bedroom – even the bathroom or kitchen.

There are many ways to fashion your gallery wall. You can display photos in frames of equal size and line them up in a grid, or you can use various pieces of art, photos and other display items and arrange them in a more haphazard fashion. If you’re mixing pieces of various sizes, try to spread out the larger pieces so they don’t become too overwhelming.

You might also want to consider choosing a theme for your gallery to tie all of your pieces together. So, for example, if you want to display photos of your travels, you might also want to include a few prints of travel related quotes or a painting of a place you’ve recently visited.

With these simple design updates, your space will feel brand new and ready for 2017.
